18 NOV - Imlil, Morocco

Date received: Tue Nov 21 2000, 03:48 AM PST

I'm currently in Imlil, a small village up in the High Atlas mountains in Morocco. I'm here because I want to climb Toubkal, the highest mountain in N. Africa.

Today, I went to a village called Asni, to visit the weekly market. Quite an impressive market, with all sorts of vegetables, spices, cooking implements, and goat parts. Complete goat heads run about 20 Dr. (US$2)

I decided it was time for a haircut, so I got it cut in the market, sitting in a chair outside; a Berber barber, as it were (the local people here are called Berbers.) It appears that there is only one Berber hairstyle; short. I now have the shortest hair I've had since I was about 5.

Tomorrow, I hike up to the hut at the base of the mountain, and the day after I go for the summit. I should be back here on the 20th.
