6 JUL - Cairo, Egypt

Date received: Fri Jul 06 2001, 12:38 PM PDT

I have finally left sub-saharan Africa, and I am now back in Cairo. After waiting almost a week for a flight, things almost fell apart just before the flight. An hour after we were supposed to board, they told us that the plan had "serious technical problems" and that they would probably be putting us up in a hotel until technicians capable of looking at the problem could arrive. 45 minutes later, when we were in the bar, they made a last boarding call. I don't what to know how they went from serious problem to flightworthy in 1/2 hour. Flying Egypt Air is frightening enough. But we made it in one piece.

My plans continue to evolve. I met up with my friend Daryl, who has also been traveling around the world, and we both decided to go to Greece and look for motorcycles. He plans on continuing up through Eastern Europe, and I plan on hanging a right through Turkey. So tomorrow, we hope to head to Luxor, do a couple of days of sightseeing, and then head straight to Athens.

I'm not sure if I will make it to Jordan and Syria at this rate, but I might pop in from the north when I pass through Turkey. This all assuming that getting a bike in Greece is feasible.
